The exceptional varieties of the Samian wine give a special place to the preferences of Greek and foreign consumers. Nevertheless, the best possible classification is the goal and can be achieved with the admirable collaboration, for the second year, of the United Winemaking Agricultural Cooperation of Samos with the Greek Wine Cellars, according to the president Ioannis Skoutas.
The famous sweet Samian wine stars in the consumption, consisting the main production, while can be offered as a gift. The demand on dry wine is also increased. “In the last years, there is tendency to prepare various cocktails; therefore sweet wines are the proper wines”.
The leader of the wines, Samos Grand Cru, is almost entirely exported mainly to France, but also to Belgium, Luxemburg, Switzerland. This wine exceeds the 40% of the production. Mr Skoutas considers this wine as the ambassador of Greece abroad. “Grand Cru rivals straightly in the French market all French wines and also wines coming from all corners of the world. The consumer may find this wine in super markets and restaurants of the global wine capital”. In France, it is treated rather as a liqueur. In Greece, we attempt to replace the cork by a screw cap that would allow some sweet wines to be sold also as a drink.
“In Greece we sell more fresh and aromatic wines, like Vin Doux and the vintage Anthemis and Nectar, made by overripe dried grapes, where we changed the packaging and can be offered as a gift”. In 2018, the United Winemaking Agricultural Cooperation of Samos will support the dry moschato Aegean Breeze, launched in 2016, rose Selana and other wine etiquettes.
The pallet includes the Ecclesiastic wine for the Holy Communion. “The Church of Greece and the Holy Metropolis of Samos and Ikaria helped us improve the product, which now has proper color, ideal for the holiness of the ceremony. Alcohol percentage was reduced, while the aromatic features of the red and white moschato were preserved”, he describes.
