Title: Harvesting… awards for the wines of the Samos Union
Quality in winemaking is what the Union of Winemaking Cooperatives of Samos has been known for worldwide. Twenty-nine (29) awards received only this year reinforce that view. This year the Union has had important awards not only for its world-famous sweet wines but also for its dry white wines; this opens up new pathways both in the domestic and international markets. All this demonstrates the excellent price/quality ratio that characterizes the wines of Samos and is a clear indication that the Samos Union is at the top of the tree.
The “award harvest” begins with the 2 Trophies that were awarded to the sweet wines Samos Anthemis 2002 and Samos Grand Cru 2008 by the prestigious Decanter (“Decanter World Wine Awards”, United Kingdom). It is worth mentioning that a “Trophy” is greater than a Gold medal. In the same competition, the sweet wines Samos Nectar 2005 and Samos Vin Doux 2008 as well as the dry Golden Samena vintage 2008 obtained Silver medals. Bronze medals were awarded to the dry wines Ageri tou Aigaiou 2008 and Psiles Korfes vintage 2008 (this wine was also characterized as “highly recommended” and given 4 stars in a special tasting by Decanter for Greek dry white wines).
Remaining in the demanding market of Great Britain, the popular “International Wine & Spirit Competition” classified the sweet wines Samos Anthemis 2002 and Samos Nectar 2005 as Best-in-Class in the Silver medal category while the Samos Grand Cru 2008, the Samos Vin Doux 2008 and the dry Ageri 2008 and Psiles Korfes vintage 2008 received Bronze awards. Concluding with the competitions of this country, in the “International Wine Challenge” the Samos Anthemis 2002 added to its collection another Silver medal and the Samos Vin Doux 2008 and the dry Psiles Korfes vintage 2008 bronze medals (the Samos Grand Cru 2008 and the Samos Nectar 2005 were classified as “Commended”).
The rest of Europe was not indifferent to the wines of the Samos Cooperative, either. Gold medals were awarded to the Samos Anthemis 2003 and the dry Ageri tou Aigaiou 2008 in the demanding competition “Concours Mondial de Bruxelles” in Belgium. Ageri tou Aigaiou also received a bronze in the French competition “Challenge International du vin”.
Crossing the Atlantic and with Canada as final destination, silver medals were obtained by the Samos Anthemis 2003 and the dry Ageri tou Aigaiou 2008 in the reputable “Selections Mondiales des vins”.
Last but not least, in the annual international competition held in Thessaloniki, Greece, the following medals were awarded: 3 Gold medals to the Samos Anthemis 2003, Samos Grand Cru 2008 and Samos Vin Doux 2008 and a Silver to the Samos Nectar 2005. The sweet organic-farming wine of Samos obtained a Gold Medal in a special organic-farming wine competition held by one of the biggest Greek certification agencies for organic products, DIO. The timing was perfect, as it has just been listed in one of the biggest supermarket chains in Greece.
