Buyers from Berry Brothers & Rudd were particularly impressed with the
dry wine “Psiles Korfes” which they proceeded to order through the Union
of Samos Wine Cooperatives’ agent Mary Pateras of Eclectic Wines. A first
shipment has already been expedited to London.
Berry Bros & Rudd is, of course, the oldest and most respected wine and
spirits distributor in England, making this listing a significant achievement for
Samos wines. It is all the more important given the well-known challenges
involved with vinifying the muscat grape as a dry wine and not as a sweet
one. “Psiles Korfes” which translates into “High Peaks” is made from 100%
muscat blanc à petits grains grapes which are harvested at the beginning
of the harvest season from some of the steepest vineyards high up on the
slopes of the Karvounis mountain which defines and dominates the island
of Samos. The wine is highly aromatic and fresh with a fine body and no
bitterness in the aftertaste. Mark Squires of the Wine Advocate has described
it as a wine with a strong personality.
It is ideally served cool and is a perfect pre-dinner drink or a companion to
tapas, Greek meze and other finger food.
