Title: Four UWC Samos wines receive scores of 90 or better in the Wine Advocate
Date Added: 2013-02-07

The best way to write about the ratings that we received this year, 2012, from the Wine Advocate is to let the words of Mr. Mark Squires speak for themselves. The Wine Advocate is well known to be the wine review tribune of the famous wine writer and critic Robert Parker. The wines were reviewed by Mr. Mark Squires who is a close partner of Mr. Parker and in charge of the Greek wine sector. Following are the comments: : “I’ve adored the wines from this co-op in the past—they have a serious touch with Muscat—but this is the best group I’ve seen. You want a lovely dry Muscat? Or a thick, rich dessert wine? They’ve got you covered from top to bottom and at every level in between.” Samos Anthemis 2006 – Rating 95 points – sweet wine aged 5 years “…this is quite a sexy beast…Complex, very dark in color—by far the darkest of the group—and astonishingly rich in flavor, it is quite delicious. It is another big winner from this co-op, whose wines I’ve loved in the past. I would like to tell you how long the finish lasted, but it hasn’t stopped yet. If you see the sweeties from this co-op and you like dessert wines—just grab them. You’ll thank me later…” Samos Nectar 2002 – Rating 93 points – sweet wine aged 3 years “…With the powerful and complex aromatics of sun dried grapes and aging wine, this has dark color and rich flavors cut by vigorous acidity, very much along the lines of Santorini Vinsanto, but with a twist. This is very fine, mouth watering, crisp, aromatic and intensely flavorful. As it airs out, it shows not only sex appeal, but very fine balance. The acidity gives it a light-on-its-feet feel at times. Unlike really sweet and sugary concoctions, this does show a more serious demeanor periodically. It is certainly not over the top in any way, although take that in the context of dessert wines…” Samos Grand Cru 2011 – Rating 91 points – sweet wine “fresher” perspective “…This is all Muscat Blanc Petit Grain, fortified and sweet but not intended to be as sweet as the regular “vin doux” offering. The winery, in fact, says that this is the driest of their fortifieds, with 130 grams per liter of residual sugar as it is allowed to ferment naturally to a certain point before fortification…At the moment, it is a lot sexier than the winery’s restrained description. The combination of acidity and sugar is just perfect. The wine is showing beautifully, fragrant, delicious and well balanced, fresh and flavorful…” High Peaks 2011 – Rating 90 points – dry white from mountainous vineyards “…typically an utterly charming wine with distinction and character, plus, of course, those pungent Muscat aromatics. In its youth, this is quite brawny and vigorous for this bottling, with serious persistence on the lingering and very flavorful finish. I’ve come to expect this persistence from this bottling and it sure doesn’t disappoint this year. Balanced and well integrated, this displays its Muscat heritage proudly, but is always harmonious and sunny with fine acidity...”
